What is process and controls understanding in audit?

Process and controls understanding · last updated 2026-09-02

Process and controls understanding is the work an auditor performs to understand how a significant business process operates, where a material misstatement could arise and which controls are intended to prevent or detect it.

It normally covers the flow of transactions from initiation through recording and reporting; the people, systems and information involved; relevant risks; and the design and implementation of controls. The resulting documentation may include a narrative, process map, risk-and-control view, walkthrough evidence and the auditor's conclusions.

This work is foundational to audit planning. If the process understanding is generic, outdated or copied forward without challenge, the risk assessment and planned response are built on weak context. If it is clear and evidence-led, the team can focus its work more intelligently and have better conversations with the client.

Platformed capability: Platformed turns walkthrough calls, questionnaires, documents and prior-year notes into structured process work. It prepares the notes, maps, risks and control-assessment evidence, while the auditor reviews the source material, challenges the conclusions and approves what goes on the file.
