What is AI audit software?
AI audit software uses artificial intelligence to perform defined parts of audit work: reading evidence, preparing documentation, identifying relevant risks and controls, testing information against a methodology, and drafting outputs for auditor review.
The important distinction is between software that merely helps an auditor write faster and software that can complete structured audit legwork. A general-purpose assistant may summarise a document or draft an email. Purpose-built audit AI should understand the workflow, the evidence requirements, the firm's methodology and the review points that sit around the work.
Good AI audit software should therefore do more than produce fluent text. It should show the evidence behind its conclusions, explain its rationale, make uncertainty visible and allow an auditor to challenge, amend and approve the result. The output still belongs to the audit team. AI changes how the work is prepared; it does not transfer professional responsibility to the software.
